The word of God is the message he has us. Most recently the author says that “ a long time later he spoke through David” ( Heb. Hebrews starts off with “ In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” ( Heb. Over and over in these first four chapters he has talked about God speaking in one way or another. Rather it is the message that God has given to us.Īnd I believe that is what the author is referring to here. This word is neither the physical Bible nor Jesus himself. James 1:21 also refers to the word planted in us that can save us. But Jesus himself was also the Word of God ( John 1:1-3, 14). The Bible most certainly falls into the overall ‘word of God’. And even the Old Testament, the Hebrew Scriptures, was not yet fully canonized. The New Testament was still being produced when Hebrews was written. Oftentimes we understand the ‘word of God’ to be synonymous with the Bible.
